Just A Little Drink: Why Not?

So drinking is your own business? Indeed it is! At least up to a point. You're right, man has used alcohol for thousands of years to brace up the faint, to cheer up festivities, to drown out his problems, etc. So you say that moderate drinking is all right. Moderate drinking? When does moderate drinking develop into intemperance? You can go to any rescue mission and hear the same story over and over. The person had money, prestige, a good job, a fine family, but then all at once, or so it seemed, he was on the skids. It all started out with a little drink that "won't/wouldn't hurt." The very thing that had made him friends had turned on him and had caused his ruination. The biblical warning, "Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise" (Proverbs 20:1) , has/had now been proven in his very own life. And the drink demon had not been satisfied until the victim hit rock bottom. Many traffic accidents are ...

How Readest Thou! (Poem)

It is one thing to read the Bible through, It’s another thing to read to learn and do. Some read it as their duty once a week, But no instructions from the Bible (do they) seek. Some read to bring themselves into repute By showing others how often they can dispute. While others read because their neighbors do To see how long ’twill take to read it through. Some read it for the wonders that are there, How David killed a lion and a bear. While others read it with uncommon care, Hoping to find some contradictions there. One reads with father’s specs upon his head, And sees the thing just as his father said. Some read to prove a pre-adopted creed, Hence understand but little that they read. For every passage in the book they bend, To make it suit that all-important end. Some people read as I have often thought, To teach the Bible instead of being taught. And some there are who read it out of spite, I fear there are but few who read it right. So...

Sincere But Mistaken

Constructing a proper and reliable building is possible using a tool called a plumb-line . Without such a tool, the builder -- however well-meaning and sincere -- is likely to make serious errors. Likewise, our lives and beliefs need to be guided by the plumb-line of God's Word. (Read Psalms 119:105, 2 Timothy 3:15-17, Amos 7:8) . A popular/common concept is, "It doesn't matter what you believe, as long as you are sincere." However, one must be sincere in believing the right thing . We have great respect for a man who is so earnestly sincere in his convictions that he is willing to die for them. But sincerity is not sufficient. There was an incident that took place many years ago in the Borough of Manhattan, New York, wherein a prescription called for a quantity of Barium Sulfate , but the druggist (pharmacist) used Barium Sulfite instead. There was only the difference of one letter between the names of the two drugs; one of them is used for curative purposes,...

The Ignorant Masses

by Grant Phillips The age of knowledge is upon us, but ignorance still reigns. There is more knowledge in the 21st century than all the others combined, but very little wisdom. If you don’t think so, I'll give you some examples. 1. POLITICAL: Most politicians obviously think the masses are stupid. We're "dumber than a box of rocks" (as the saying goes), in other words, and they may be onto something. Whether it's a Republican, Democrat, Independent or Libertarian speaking, they all say the same thing... nothing. [As eloquent speakers as they are, the words they're saying have little to no substance for vindication]. We are "promised the moon" when they’re running for office, and "get the shaft" once they’re in office; "promised a pie in the sky" but "get a pie in the face". Sounds familiar? When will we realize that what we see and hear is not what we get? Oh, it’s true that we do have a choice when we vote, but w...

Jesus Christ Is Coming Again

The Lord Jesus came to earth to save man from his sins. He came in humility, in the likeness of man, and took upon him the form of a servant [Philippians 2:7] . He died for the sins of many, was buried, then rose again [1 Corinthians 15:4] , and ascended into heaven [Acts 1:9] . He was seen by the apostles and more than five hundred believers after the resurrection. After He ascended to heaven, two angels said to the disciples that His return would be like His ascension. Only God knows when the Lord will return. It may be in the evening, or at midnight, or in the morning, and at noon [Mark 13:35] . "Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh" [Matthew 24:44] . Some have predicted the time of His return, even to the day and hour. "But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only" [Matthew 24:36] . He will come unexpectedly as a thief in the night [2 Peter 3:10] . "For as a sn...
