The Ignorant Masses

by Grant Phillips

The age of knowledge is upon us, but ignorance still reigns. There is more knowledge in the 21st century than all the others combined, but very little wisdom. If you don’t think so, I'll give you some examples.

1. POLITICAL:

Most politicians obviously think the masses are stupid. We're "dumber than a box of rocks" (as the saying goes), in other words, and they may be onto something. Whether it's a Republican, Democrat, Independent or Libertarian speaking, they all say the same thing... nothing. [As eloquent speakers as they are, the words they're saying have little to no substance for vindication]. We are "promised the moon" when they’re running for office, and "get the shaft" once they’re in office; "promised a pie in the sky" but "get a pie in the face". Sounds familiar? When will we realize that what we see and hear is not what we get? Oh, it’s true that we do have a choice when we vote, but who provides the choices? The Electoral College, among other things. Those who are really in control present us with two negatives. Rarely -- and I do mean rarely -- is there ever a positive provided in our options. Nevertheless, we go along like "lambs led to the slaughter" -- or "sheeple", so to speak -- while our leaders sharpen their knives unbeknownst to many of us.

2. COMMERCIAL:

One of the greatest influences on the American household is commercials. Billions of dollars are spent (annually) on commercials. Now why do you think corporations would spend that kind of money if (they thought) there would be no return (whatsoever) on their investment(s)? They know that many more billions will be spent by consumers who purchase things they don’t need [and these people will therefore see a much greater profit]. Most Americans are in debt up to their eyeballs because they think they just have to have that next little goodie that's being advertised. Here are the most common excuses:

"Oh, it’s a new version!"

"It's the latest thing!"

"I just can’t do without it!"

"I’ve got to have it!"

"Everyone's got it!" or "Everyone else can afford it!"

"It's the STYLE!" or "It's IN style these days!

Many over the last few years have lost their homes because they bought a house they could not afford. Others buy automobiles they (know they) cannot afford. Electronic gadgets, home supplies, yard supplies, sports supplies, clothing and dining are but a few more examples of purchases that often are not needed and beyond affordability, but bought (and usually charged, mainly on credit cards) anyway.

PARENTHETICAL THOUGHT:

The last in this "The Ignorant Masses" trilogy is spiritual.

-In the first of our examples, others tell us who to vote for. So we allow them to provide their choice of men (and sometimes women) who will lead us.

-In the second of our examples, others tell us what to purchase. So we allow them to tell us what, when, where, and how to purchase their commodities that we usually don't really need in the first place.

-Now here is the big question. Since we obviously can't think for ourselves anyway, who are we going to listen to concerning our soul and its eternal destination?

3. SPIRITUAL:

We may let others lead us around by the nose and ruin our lives while on earth, but this life on earth is but one grain of sand on the world’s beaches when compared to where [and how long] we will spend eternity. Eternity is forever. Eternity is final. If we allow the wrong "others" to determine our decision about eternity, we are in a fix that cannot be changed. That will be our destiny forever, and ever, and ever... with no end.

Do you think there is no life after death? Who are you listening to? Do you think there is no God? Who are you listening to?

So you're proud of the decisions you have made in this life about earthly matters? You educated yourself wisely. You purchased wisely. You are out of debt. You married the right person. You raised your children properly. You have taken care of your body. What about your soul? If you make the wrong decision about eternity, everything else is lost. Even if you made all bad decisions about earthly matters in this life, you've still lost everything if you don't choose wisely about eternity.

Now you're confused. Should you even listen to me? If you like, you may certainly take this article, print it, and use it to start a fire in that fireplace you can't afford. I'll give you a better option, the Bible. The Bible is the Holy written Word of God and will tell you nothing but the Truth. You don’t believe the Bible? Why is that? Oh I see, you think it is just an old outdated book not suited for modern living. Are you sure? Who are you listening to? For once in your life, because this really matters, listen to that voice inside of you that is telling you that you may just be wrong, and if you’re wrong, where does that leave you? That voice inside of you is the Spirit of God drawing you to Him. You need to listen. If you don't hear it, then you need to ask God now to speak to you.

God tells us that He loves us so much He sent His Son to die for us that we might be saved.

"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast." -(Ephesians 2:8-9)

That's just for starters. Read the Bible if you want the Truth.

Do you think this is all nonsense because you think your favorite so-called "star" [or "celebrity"] is doing just fine and having so much fun? Maybe you’re listening to some religious speaker who tells you just what you want to hear? Could it be the atheist or agnostic down the street? More than likely, its friends and family members who have no interest in their eternity destiny. Whoever you're listening to, if they are in contradiction to God's Word, the Bible, then you're listening to the wrong people.

Among the ignorant masses are those who have chosen wisely about the eternal destiny of their soul. They are no longer spiritually ignorant. They have been informed of the Truth, and have determined to spend eternity with the Jesus Christ, the Son of God. They have been given a free gift -- eternal life, by the grace of God, and it is theirs -- but it can only be received by accepting Jesus Christ as their Savio(u)r. Jesus said that no one can come to God the Father, except through Him.

Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." -(John 14:6)

So, who are you going to listen to? Will you continue to be just one of the ignorant masses, or one of the wise who will call upon Jesus Christ to save your soul, guaranteeing eternity with Him? The decision is now in your hands. Choose wisely.
