Age of Celebrity: Eternity Abandoned for Fleeting Immortality

by Wilfred Hahn Every year Forbes publishes its list of the Top 100 celebrities. The magazine's 2011 tally of America's top celebrities provided the most recent snapshot of this ever-changing world of fame and fortune. No doubt, some of these people would be recognizable to readers. The latest Top-100 contenders collectively earned $4.5 billion in 2010 (an average of $45 million each). Some of them were newcomers to the list, such as Justin Bieber, the young 17-year-old heartthrob crooner who ranked 3rd [place]. Others are long-time entertainers such as Oprah Winfrey (ranked #2, who is estimated to have earned $290 million in 2010 and has a reputed [total] net worth of over $3 billion). There can be no doubt: Celebrity is big business. A recent book, written by Jo Piazza (a former gossip columnist with the liberal New York Times ) entitled Celebrity, Inc.: How Famous People Make Money examines how competitive and facile is this world of celebrity. Quoting her on what she

General End-Time Commentary

September 27th, 2004 WHY I BELIEVE THE RAPTURE IS VERY NEAR If you've been a regular visitor of this site, you might know the official view of Rapture Ready is that the Church will not know the exact date of the pre-tribulation rapture. We do maintain that believers will be able to estimate the nearness of the rapture by looking at various end-time precursors. The Bible clearly says, "And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh" (Luke 21:28) . In recent days I've become all the more convinced the time to look for our redemption is drawing very, very nigh (near). I base this sense of urgency on six major end-time indicators. A single warning sign would not be a strong enough reason to speculate the rapture might be near. Dozens of indicators pointing in the same direction, however, produce a high combined mathematical probability that something is about to happen. Many of these indicat

Satan's Blank Check

by Terry James September 6th, 2004 Throughout history the spiritual health of society has been in a constant state of flux. The struggle between the forces of good and evil has caused the moral compass to rise and fall as nations have shifted between times of revival and times of apostasy. Because the ascent of Israel's moral record is so well documented in the Bible, it provides us with a detailed example of this endless cycle. The children of Israel started off on the straight and narrow. Then the devil would deceive them, God would punish the nation, and the Israelites would turn back to God. England and America also have a rich history of revival and apostasy. There have been many revivals in both these nations. Here are just a few that have had a far-reaching impact: THE FIRST GREAT AWAKENING (1740-1745) THE SECOND GREAT AWAKENING (1798-1832) THE WELSH REVIVAL OF 1859 THE GREAT WELSH REVIVAL OF 1904 THE ASUZA STREET REVIVAL OF 1906 (The beginning of the Pentecost

Women See Male Leadership as Love

by Henry Makow, Ph.D. (From May 10, 2008) If a man cannot perform in bed, he is called "impotent". The woman feels unloved and unwanted. However, outside the bedroom, if a man doesn't demonstrate his power, he is considered "enlightened" and "progressive". But somewhere in their subconscious, women still feel let down. For centuries, women (and children) have relied on men to help define their lives. Men are failing their families when they buy into egalitarian feminist shibboleths and try to be "nice guys". Marriage is the exchange of female power for male power expressed as love. Women crave male power because in their minds, it is love. When a man fails to lead his family and allows them to manipulate him, the women (and children) feel unloved and consequently have less respect and love for him. The old proverb, "Spare the rod, spoil the child" (definitely) applies herein. Women and children feel most secure when husb

The Ignorant Masses

by Grant Phillips The age of knowledge is upon us, but ignorance still reigns. There is more knowledge in the 21st century than all the others combined, but very little wisdom. If you don’t think so, I'll give you some examples. 1. POLITICAL: Most politicians obviously think the masses are stupid. We're "dumber than a box of rocks" (as the saying goes), in other words, and they may be onto something. Whether it's a Republican, Democrat, Independent or Libertarian speaking, they all say the same thing... nothing. [As eloquent speakers as they are, the words they're saying have little to no substance for vindication]. We are "promised the moon" when they’re running for office, and "get the shaft" once they’re in office; "promised a pie in the sky" but "get a pie in the face". Sounds familiar? When will we realize that what we see and hear is not what we get? Oh, it’s true that we do have a choice when we vote, but w
