PROFANITY: Swearing, Jesting and Joking

The Bible says: "A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good: and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh" [Luke 6:45].

The use of profane world is indeed very prevelant in many places and is looked upon as being up-to-date & modern in many present-day societies where the most important thing -- salvation -- is often neglected. Webster (and his dictionary) associates profanity with: Not sacred or holy, irreverent toward God and man, contempt for holy things, blasphemy and serving to defile that which is holy. Also, as not possessing expert knowledge.

Generally it is not understood what a person does when using profane language. This is especially true of children. Can anyone realise/realize the doom that he [or she] pronounces on a soul -- the real you -- that never dies, but lives on in eternity? In James 3:6 we read: "And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell."

The meaning of some curse (cuss) words is that God should curse instead of forgive, put in prison instead of set free, cast away instead of deliver; that God would use His power to punish instead of bless or have mercy, to be guilty instead of pardoned, deprived of all happiness of both body and soul in this world and in the next (eternity), shut out of heavy and cast into hell.The horrible condemnation man can pronounce upon hisself is indescribable, and can only be continued when one is sold to and is under the control of Satan. When one gets enlightened on the subject, it becomes obnoxious. "Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest" [Psalm 51:4]. "Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain" [Exodus 20:7].

Dear friend, sure the Lord "...is longsuffering to usward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance" [2 Peter 3:9].

Today thereis still pardon for our sines if we come to the Lord Jesus, who made an atonement for our sines through His shed blood. "Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sines be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red as crimson, they shall be as wool" [Isaiah 1:18]. "And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors" [Matthew 6:12]. "And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness, and true holiness," and "Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace to the hearers" [Ephesians 4:24-29].

The Apostle Paul wrote in Ephesians 5:3,4 to the professing Christian/believer: "Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient.." as being such as should not once be heard "or named mong you as becometh saints". The tongue, unless the heart of man is cleansed by the Holy Spirit, remains an unruly evil in one way or another, even though man may possibly cease and desist/refrain from grosser sins such as profanity and kindred evils; nevertheless, out of the heart the mouth speaketh. "Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salf..." [Colossians 4:6].

The Lord had been longsuffering and we are still in the day of grace when we can prepar to meet our God. He will deliver us from every sin, if we will let Him. "For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal (if we are saved), but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds; casting down imaginations and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ!" [2 Corinthians 10:4,5]. "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me (Jesus); because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor, he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach to deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised" [Luke 4:18].

You Tell On Yourself
You tell on yourself...

By the world you speak,
By the friends you seek,
By the way you employ your leisure time,
By the use you make of your dollar and dime;

You tell what you are by the things you wear,
By the spirit you, your burdens bear,
By the kind of thinks at which you laugh,
By the songs you sing, just a paragraph;

You tell what you are by the way you walk,
By the things of which you delight to talk,
By the manner in which you bear defeat,
By so simple a thing as the way you eat,
By the books you choose from the well-filled shelf;

In these things and more -- you tell on yourself.

  1. I LOVE that poem you posted. You tell on yourself. I am going to post that everywhere. I have a ghetto ( Lord forgive me if I am judging) neighbor whose two minor kids are indulging in poor lifestyles, who has just had another child outside of marriage , she has no education and lives in a section 8 house with her grandmother, her grandmothers live in boyfriend of 45 yrs who is all in my business saying I'm pregnant! I am shocked she has so much time to mind my business when her life sucks so much. I can't for the life of me understand why people like that cannot mind their business and live the lives of others alone!!! Thanks for posting! I really enjoy your blog!

  2. Thanks for your comments/compliments.

    I don't mean to talk about my own momma like this, but she too, speaks pretty bad English; sometimes I correct her, but other times I don't have the heart to do so. But I hate how she -- as well as my elder sister who's currently pregnant w/ twins, which'll make 6 children by 3 different men -- butchers the English language, and when we go out in public. This is especially when we go to to important places & around professional people, b/c it's so embarrassing. She curses/cusses a lot & doesn't pronounce words properly & phrases things wrong a lot of times. But that's her & I've accepted the fact that it's unlikely she'll change.

    I'm sorry that these people get on your nerves. The woman's grandmother is the LAST person on God's green earth who ought to be judging ANYONE, b/c she's been shacking up [or co-habitating, which is the politically-correct word for it] w/ someone she's not even married to for 4.5 decades. No only that the next 3 generations have made the same mistake(s) that she's made in having children out of wedlock. I have a similar problem in my family, but I'm just glad I've learned from their mistakes.

    Many times when people are gossip-y busybodies they are usually guilty of the very same things that they accuse others [and spread rumours about] of. These are a few of the sins that will send people's souls to a devil's hell. But don't worry about it, nor let it get to you too much, though; people like this will NEVER amount to a hill of soup beans in life, anyhow.

    I despise [more than words can say] when people -- especially black folks -- act ghetto & speak trashy Ebonics; it just shows a lack of education & intelligence in general. Moreover is displays our regression, too. Ever heard the saying, 'It's better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth & remove all doubt'? Well, there's a LOT of truth to that, especially in this respect. IMO, but I SWEAR that this rap/hippity-hop/urban business is the WORST thing that has happened to black people since slavery. It's caused black folks to look worse, act worse, dress worse, live worse, talk worse, walk worse, etc.

    But I don't let that stuff influence me, b/c I'm ABOVE it. Besides, the Lord commands us to separate from this world & the things in it [although we're still IN it, but that's beside the point], b/c the world today as wel know it will someday pass away for good; it's NOT a matter of IF but WHEN it'll happen, b/c His Word says so.

    So good looking out... and once again, thanks for taking the time out to comment one one of the topics of my blog... whoever you are. ;D
